HE watched agog as Corrie proceeded in an orderly fashion to shed her garments. First she took off her uniform jacket, and then she stepped out of her breeches. Next she removed her choker and laid her white shirt carefully on top of a flat boulder where it would not get wet. Tom could see that she was a tidy person by nature, even in the wilds. She peeled off her stockings one by one and stuffed them into the toes of her buckled shoes. Her bare legs were young and smooth, and Tom wanted very much to run his hands up and down them. Why was she not entering the water? Had she changed her mind? Were all his hopes to be dashed?
She stood there on the rocky brink still wearing her hat.
Tom wondered why she was hesitating. She was fearless in battle, but yet here, teetering on the edge of this pool, Corrie Harriman seemed to hesitate as if something in her past just caught up with her, some inner horror.
He dared not look down at her mysterious lower regions for fear of seeing her tentacles. He knew nothing of female anatomy.
âBetter not get your hat wet,â he managed to say, his voice a hoarse croak.
âOh, I forgot,â she said, and removed that symbol of her authority and laid it carefully on top of her heaped and folded clothes.
Now she had nothing on at all.
When she shook out her shining tresses, Tom had trouble breathing.
Her yellow-gold locks settled in waves about her rounded ivory shoulders and tumbled down to the small of her back.
A vision from a fable.
Eagerly Tom tore off his own clothes without ceremony, throwing them higgledy-piggledy on the ground, and dived into the water.
Silvery bubbles erupted around him.
Talk about having a hot bath!
For a few ecstatic moments he coasted along under the water, enjoying the considerable heat of the volcanic spring, and then surfaced to find that Corrie was still standing there, hugging her nakedness and staring apprehensively down at the water.
âThe waterâs warm,â he said, shaking his wet hair clear of his eyes.
âJoin me?â he added hopefully.
âIâm trying,â she said, and then slowly, greatly daring, she entered the bubbling spring, walking forward across the gently shelving bottom, and by degrees the water rose up around her, deeper and deeper until she was immersed first to her waist, then to her breasts, and finally to her shoulders.
It was clear that she was fighting an inner demon. She was frightened of the water. Perhaps this was the first bath she had ever had in her whole life? Many people went their whole lives without taking a bath.
âDuck your head under,â he whispered. âJust hold your nose with your fingers. The water wonât hurt you.â
She ducked her head under and came up for air, gasping.
âHold me,â she said, her voice unsteady.
He needed no urging.
He put his arms around her and drew her to him, and her long hair floated around her head in a wide fan, looking much darker now that it was wet.
